Events

Yes, we did it again, winning “Best Club Attitude” at last weekend’s 4 and Rotary Ardmore Showdown inaugural event.

Have a trophy!

Thanks to everyone who helped with the stand; compared to Nats it was a far more laid back approach with the added advantage of spectators being able to walk around all the cars and view them up close. The feedback we got overall as a group was amazing – the velo bike gained a lot of attention, I personally fielded a lot of comments about Taistorm’s Mirage Turbo, and a lot of people seemed intrigued about the audio setup in squid. Clearly there is still a heap of interest in the nostalgic/oddball stuff!

This'll look good in the pool room...

You may have noticed in my previous posts the mention of the auction I went to and subsequently ended up with a new vehicle that I didn’t plan on.

If all the talk around the auction was to be believed, the previous owner (or “hoarder” as they were referred to in the auction title (for good reason)) was a Japanese chap who had some manner of tie in with an Osaka automotive museum, he passed on and his young son wanted nothing to do with the cars and all manner of other lark that filled the shed.  The son attempted to sell the vehicles on his own but some of the wrong people managed to get ilk and subsequently stole several vehicles.  After this happened, the place was made a lot more secure and the charge of handling the task went to Christchurch Auctions.

When looking around the place, the tie in with some kind of auto museum makes sense, the collection varied wildly in make, model and condition.  The Prince Skyline Super (S21D-4) that I went up to see, in the initial auction pictures, seemed to be in OK nick.  That is however the illusion of photographs, as you can see with mine.

Can you handle how much this car cranks?

The crank handle is in the car because I wanted to make sure the engine actually spun to help dictate what price I was willing to pay.  It did spin too, quite freely.  Certainly a lot more freely than how bound up my one was. (read: locked solid) now the few things I needed from it.  Fender Mirrors, Grille Badge, Bonnet trim, Rear trim, they weren’t all in great condition but they were better than mine which don’t exist.   (more…)

…none other than oldschool.co.nz!

it was indeed a very grand (albeit exhaustingly long) day. Chur to all who came along and supported/helped out with setup and on the day, yous knows who yous all are, and big ups to Richy, Chris, Leon, Duddley and all the others who made the stand such a success, winning Best New Club on the Block is hardly something to scoff at.

A special mention also goes to sheepers, whose 1UZ-powered Celica took out the Judges’ Choice Best V8 award.

Here is a short walkaround video of the club stand, which was modeled after a 1980s car yard. Some seriously sweet vehicles in our lineup, one can only hope next year’s effort will be just as awesome if not better!

And as a person who’s never paid much attention to underbonnet presentation on my cars (I’m more of a function over form type of guy) I have been somewhat converted to the idea of making the engine bay of squid tidy enough to be displayed if ever the need arises.

After busting my arse all week to get both DR30s to Hampton Downs, an administrative fuckup today resulted in neither of my cars being judged in the show and shine competition at Nizfest which I paid to enter.

The organizers gave me two bottles of cleaner wax as amends, but I don’t think I will return next year unless a retro-classics or oldschool.co.nz club stand is organized. Was pretty disappointed and ended up leaving the event early after discovering this.

However Snoozin von Richy of OS fame snapped these photos of the DR30s on the trip home, which kinda cheered me up a little. And at least I made it there and back in the end, even after all the trouble squid was giving me! Thanks to all of the OS guys who came down for the day, and cheers to Ned for taking on driving duties in the coupe.

My own photos of the day will be up within the next 24 hours. There was a definite lack of older Nissans and Datsuns this year.

So rest your faith on some solemn note.

Squid definitely needs to go lower. For the love of dish!

When I give up on you it's not me being callous.

Coupe has near-on perfect road stance though.

Send me a letter, tell me how it's going.

BICYCLE GANG SUMMIT 2011

August 21, 2011

This Steez be Real.

Retro bikes of many types, both stock and heavily modified, all converged upon the pleasant resort town of Taupo for a weekend of cycle cruising, comb fights, jousting and other casual festivities. The weather was pretty much perfect all weekend with spectacularly sunny skies, though it did end up being rather chilly with the entire country riding out the end of a cold snap! (no pun intended)

Couldn't have asked for better weather than this.

Much DIY ingenuity was on display, with a number of super slammed custom two-wheeled rides turning up to scrape their way along the Taupo streets with much vigor and enthusiasm!

Complete with height control.

All in all, a great turnout for the first inaugural Bike Summit, and it looks like this will become another regular fixture on the hallowed OS calendar. Once again, thanks to the fair citizens of Taupo for being so accommodating, I guess it’s not every day that such an unconventional bunch of cyclists take to the streets of town! Check out Ed’s flickr album here, or click the link below for the official pics thread on OS which includes some shots from the 1VAKND trackday which was held concurrently on the Friday.

Cycle cruise.
