Car Spotting

Goo-net, stop tempting me thus.

February 22, 2010

With all of my current disposable income tied up in getting the banana complied and road-legal, stumbling across inspirational DR30s on Goo-net does not help at all. Some might argue that I shouldn’t be browsing said sites if I don’t wanna be tempted into working (read: spending money) on the numerous other pieces of junk that grace my storage shed, but what else are you gonna do when you’re bored at work?

Low-down config’d, red squinteye KDR30 on bronze Watanabe RS-8s = mega friggin’ win.

Low-down config, it has.

Though I can’t tell if those are 55- or 60-section tyres. I’m leaning towards fitting 55s when I eventually stick my Watties on, purely because they aren’t as balloon-spec and speedometer accuracy be damned.

OK, so I’ve been slack recently in that I went outside the realms of automotive interest to travel a cumulative total of 1300 odd kilometres to attend the Faith No More – Second Coming gig recently held in CHC.  Despite this however, on the journey up the country I took note of the placing of a few cars on the side of the road and in paddocks and other such thing and during my return voyage I took the time to stop and snap photos where possible of said cars with my “backup camera”.  The results are as such;

I’m constantly surprised and disappointed by the number of inaccuracies that seem to pop up in many Speedhunters articles, especially to do with Japanese nostalgic vehicles. For example, check out this recent piece on Sumo Power’s DR30 Skyline. Can you spot the incredibly glaring error straightaway?

Loyal readers, this is a DR30 Skyline... or is it?

That’s right, it’s a HR30, not a DR30. Complete with autobox, plush button seats, and L20ET under the hood.

In the spirit of proper journalism, I wonder if they’ll issue a correction – as judging from the comments section, a lot of their readers just plain don’t know better either. Someone even mistakes it for a HR31 and pastes a trademe link to a GTS-X. Now I see why Michael got so hot under the collar that last time Speedhunters referred to the C10 chassis as the “first ever Skyline”…

Actually the most maddening part is wondering whether the owner of the above HR30 knows that it’s not actually a DR30, or if he’s been horrendously misled? I know I would be rather indignant if some chump sold me a car under false pretenses.

I can forgive Speedhunters the odd little inaccuracy such as saying all JZX100s were turbocharged (they weren’t), but sometimes things like this are too hard to ignore – especially when it’s a popular blog with a huge following worldwide. Sort it the fuck out, guys!

Minkara Toyota Terrificness!

This kid knows where it's at.

Oh you crazy gangs!

(more…)

So, not long after Adrian and I had been to retrieve his new Race-car that cost him a 24-pack, my girlfriend was talking with one of her friends about it and evidently, her friends boyfriend had one that was now sitting around doing nothing.  Interesting!  Although for the most part people seem to confuse the 1st and 2nd Generation of Civic, so I didn’t get any hopes up until I could check it out in person.  We were given the details of where is was sitting (out on a farm, no less.  This is Southland after-all) and did an afternoon mission to check it out in person.  What I had been told was that it was Dead Registration, Cooked Motor & Slushbox.  So.  Off we went, following the crudely drawn map to the car’s location.  After following the appropriate directions I was greeted with this site;

Gate Support, JDM Civic, y0!

So, first sight showed that it was indeed a 1st Generation car and not only that but it had fender mirrors!  They would simply have to be utilised.  So it came time for a closer look, (more…)
