Hey Alistair, I think these guys stole your thunder!

1986 Toyota Century VG40, start price $12,000

I’m finding more and more ’80s Japanese sportscars and other rarities on tardme every week. The fact that most of them are listed at ridiculous prices has its advantages and disadvantages (as I’ve complained about bitterly in the past); though I suppose if prices stay artificially inflated there’s a chance I might get a tiny bit more than the “asking price” I had envisioned for the KDR30 if I ever decide to pass it on. We shall see.

But it’s amusing to see the sort of price disparities that exist between the auctions in Japan and the yards over here (even after taking shipping and compliance into effect) – which might be the subject of another blog entry one day if I ever get my USS login back.

Anyway, back to liberty8… this must be the yard mentioned in an earlier blog post, because in addition to the aforementioned Century… look – there’s that Soarer, that AW11 MR2, and that Fairlady 200ZR!

2010 OS Nats Poker Run

February 28, 2010

Escaped the hideous humidity of Auckland on a whim late Friday night and headed to Taupo to catch up with the boes (and boettes) of the oldschool.co.nz car club at the annual Nationals. While I didn’t manage to make it to trackday I did stick around for the poker run on Saturday, the subsequent cruise, and requisite OTP afterwards. Good times were had by all, and Taupo is great this time of year!

sweet random snap from a recent discussion thread about Skylines and race livery. I quite like the Calsonic colour(s) myself, even though I’ve never been a large fan of blue cars. (It’s second only to the DR30 Silhouette red’n'black in my books, but that’s a given!)

Of equal interest is the large MIKUNI logo on the wall in the background… now how sweet would that be on a t-shirt?!

Number 24, Calsonic HR31

but riddle me this: who drove the #24 car, and when? The only one I remember is #12.

Well, almost. Still gotta sort out some proper front seats to match the rest of the interior trim, find some O.Z Racing centre caps for the rims, and buy some Cusco adjustable camber top mounts via Ewan @ hayatonka…

But other than that I’m actually signing off on one of my projects for the first time! (the “I’m finished!” post from last year now seems a little bit premature in hindsight, but ah well.) let’s hope that neither banana nor squid take as long to complete!

here’s an up-to-date photo of the car as it sits now. More after the jump.

I’m fairly confident this is the only TX3 of its condition left in this country… possibly the world? What a maddening thought.

Goo-net, stop tempting me thus.

February 22, 2010

With all of my current disposable income tied up in getting the banana complied and road-legal, stumbling across inspirational DR30s on Goo-net does not help at all. Some might argue that I shouldn’t be browsing said sites if I don’t wanna be tempted into working (read: spending money) on the numerous other pieces of junk that grace my storage shed, but what else are you gonna do when you’re bored at work?

Low-down config’d, red squinteye KDR30 on bronze Watanabe RS-8s = mega friggin’ win.

Low-down config, it has.

Though I can’t tell if those are 55- or 60-section tyres. I’m leaning towards fitting 55s when I eventually stick my Watties on, purely because they aren’t as balloon-spec and speedometer accuracy be damned.
