Amazing “Barn Find”

August 17, 2009

They just keep coming, you know there’s got to be a metric f**kload of magical cars tucked away places you just don’t get to see them an then when someone stumbles upon them for whatever reason, you’re always just taken aback with their existence.  One such car that’s come to light in Australia recently is this little sucker;

CSP311 Nissan Silvia

CSP311 Nissan Silvia

Just magic.  Such a beautiful car.  The very first Nissan to wear the ‘Silvia’ nameplate.  It’s a shame they stopped for so long afterward and then stopped again more recently.  The first Silvia was a new body ontop of Fairlady Roadster mechanicals.  This particular one has a few bits incorrect but that’s a price to be paid when all of this shape were hand-made so any breaks and such, especially in a place other than it’s country of origin (Japan) would prove difficult to get the required parts to replace.  This fine example of a motor vehicle is in Tasmania.  You can read more about it via the JNC (Japanese Nostalgic Car) forums.

Though before you go there, here’s a few more pictures of it;

Yeah, it’s a gem alright.  You should see it once it was taken out of the shed and given a bit of a wash;

Japanese Nostalgic Car – Nissan Silvia CSP311 …hidden away for the last 24years.

Of course, if you read a little rather than just peering at the pictures, you’ll note that it was only discovered whilst attempting to buy another pretty special vehicle.  More on that here.

Amazing what some people keep hidden away.

    I know where one of these Silvia’s is in NZ sitting you could call it a barn find by the look of it but its more of garage find lol, does anyone else know of any others in NZ?

    You’re talking about the one that the chap who also owns an S10 Silvia, owns? I have a feeling that his might well be the only one in the country. However. Unsure. Also yet to see photographic evidence of it. Have you seen it in person?

  • [OLDMAZ] says:

    Yes that is the chap, I have not seen it in person hwoever my old man knows the guy and has photos of it I think his one is an Australian import?

    More than likely. Other than Japan, Australia was the only other place to get them, as far as I’m aware. I would have to investigate that to be sure though. Fairly certain that we didn’t actually get them here. Rare car, limited production numbers, probably not something that made it’s way over here in anything greater than single digits.

    I have a CSP311 sales brochure in English which states the car as a Datsun Coupe 1600 the brochure was printed in Japan and the car depicted is right hand drive. I got the brochure from the USA a few years back its even got printed on the back of it 3 American dealers one being in Texas which has been spelt wrong ‘Taxas’ so it is possible that these were sold brand new in the U.S

    I used to own a 1966 CSP311 Silvia (Car #370) that was sold new in the USA in Hawaii. It was originally owned by a Nissan Race Car Driver, Elroy Goto. I still have pictures of the car when it was nearly new in Hawaii in the 60′s.

  • kyteler says:

    Why did you sell it, Dan? I would struggle to part with something such as that.

  • Dan says:

    I owned the car for a few years, but I had too many Datsuns/Nissans (including a 67 2000, 64 1500, and 66 1600). It went into good hands to Datsun expert, Les of http://classicdatsun.com

    Here is a photo of the Silvia from back in the 60′s in Hawaii

    I love it!
