Teretonga; Southern200

January 19, 2009

Most people go to this national event to look at the family cars pretending to be race cars.  Not me though, I go for the supporting categories and the cars in the car park.  Though today, I didn’t bother even taking more than a dozen photos of the cars racing and when I did it was only because I was on my way somewhere else around the outfield car-park.

The day itself was decidedly average, with scattered showers putting perhaps a few of the non-dedicated car enthusiasts off coming altogether.  I waited until at least 2pm before I spent my thirty dollars on buying a ticket to be allowed into the grounds.

Expensive!

I drove in, turned left, parked the car amongst the many others and began my journey of everything that wasn’t the racing.  Solely for you people!  Well… and for me, afterall there’s always something interesting to see.  Though from the moment I got in the gate I noticed that the turnout of older cars was a lot lower than it has been in previous years.  I assume most people had come on the Friday or Saturday when the weather was more inviting.  However, I was there to take pictures and that’s exactly what I did.

Here is a small sample;

This particular Fairmont was in astounding shape, dead straight and well taken care of, if not restored to a beautiful level.

The forgotten Starlet

The forgotten Starlet

Often neglected or simply not thought of, the first of the front wheel drive Starlet’s are still seemingly considered a bit of a throw away car, though I suspect their day will come, let’s just hope they’re not all dead before then.  Other than the Repco wheel trims, this one was in good form!

Not a particularly common sight down south.

It was nice to see these two Porsche’s parked together, they stood out amongst the rest of the generic modern Australian and Japanese free for all that are most peoples forms of transport.

HEY! A Lada!

HEY! A Lada!

Gone are the days when these were a common sight, I simply had to take a few snaps.  It was in fantastic condition and parked in an equally fantastic spot!

Despite how it might look in this photo, it wasn’t until I got home that I realised my camera had focused on the grass in front of the Charger as opposed to the Charger itself , irrespective of this, the shot still isn’t too bad.   …I think.

These suckers (pun most definately intended) were sitting atop a Mopar beast of epic proportions.  I won’t give it away as to exactly what it is, I’ll let you discover that in the pictures themselves.

The front end of an RX3 sedan, it could do with a few bits on it touched up and from a story or two I’ve heard, it could also do with a less retarded driver and collection of friends.  Irrespective of this, the car is quite nice and that’s all I really care about.

Citrus, not your friend.

Citrus, not your friend.

This Fairlane 500 looks pretty suave from a distance, however if you get a bit closer to it, it has some of the worst orange peel paint I’ve ever seen.  Not quite as noticable in this image, if you check out this same shot in higher res. in the set, you’ll soon see what I mean.  It was a bit of a disappointment on an otherwise well presented, apparent “Dream Car”.

One of my Favourites

One of my Favourites

I love these little Alfa Romeo’s, they’re magic on wheels.  This silver example was in pristine condition, the only thing that disturbed me were the custom licence plates which left a lot to be desired.
